Tanzania now offers a convenient Online Visa (e-Visa) system for travelers visiting both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. The entire process can be completed online no paperwork, no long queues.

Tanzania Online Visa – How It Works

Travelers can apply for a Tanzania visa online by:

  1. Visiting the official Immigration Services portal

  2. Completing the e-Visa application form

  3. Uploading required documents (passport, photo, travel details)

  4. Paying the visa fee securely online

  5. Submitting the application

Once submitted:

  • Your application will be reviewed internally

  • You’ll receive email updates (approval or rejection)

  • You can track your visa status online using your application ID

  • In some cases, applicants may be requested to attend an interview at a Tanzanian Embassy or Consulate


Types of Tanzania Visas

Tanzania offers several visa categories depending on your purpose of travel:

1. Ordinary (Single Entry) Visa

  • Ideal for tourism, holidays, family visits, medical treatment, or conferences

  • Valid for up to 90 days

  • Most tourists apply for this visa

  • Note: U.S. citizens must apply for a Multiple Entry Visa due to bilateral agreements

2. Business Visa

  • Valid for up to 90 days

  • Single entry only

  • Not a substitute for a residence permit

3. Multiple Entry Visa

  • Mandatory for U.S. passport holders visiting Tanzania for tourism

  • Also available for investors, company directors, NGO representatives, spouses of Tanzanian residents, and government consultants

  • Valid for up to 12 months, with a maximum stay of 3 months per visit

  • Supporting documents are required depending on the category

4. Transit Visa

  • For travelers passing through Tanzania to another destination

  • Valid for up to 7 days

  • Not permitted for tourism activities

5. Gratis Visa

  • Issued to holders of diplomatic or official passports and certain international organization staff

  • Requires official invitation and supporting documents

6. Student Visa

  • For research, internships, volunteering, exchange programs, or academic studies

  • Fees vary based on program duration

  • Programs over 90 days require a higher-category visa or student pass


Referral Visa Category – Important Notice

Some nationalities are required to obtain visa approval before travel and are not eligible for visa on arrival.

Applicants in this category must:

  • Apply online at least one month before travel

  • Wait for approval before booking flights

  • Upload an invitation or support letter if available
